AB - Industrial revolution 4.0 applies the concept of automation, which is carry out by machine without the help of human labor. For example internet of think, big data, artificial intelligence, robot, smart machine, etc. all these thing cannot be separated from computer science. Discrete mathematics forms the mathematical foundation of computer and information science. Discrete mathematics provides ability to someone to think algorithmically. This is a qualitative descriptive study that aimed to determine students’ mathematical proficiency in solving generating function and recurrence relation in discrete mathematics course. Two students selected based on the academic outcomes as the subjects of this study. Subject in this study were student in 6th semester in discrete mathematics course. The instruments used in this study were (1) mathematical proficiency test (generating function and recurrence relation equations), (2) interviews. Data analysis techniques in this study consisted of (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, (3) verification and conclusion. The indicators of students’ mathematical proficiency skill which is used in this study included (1) conceptual understanding, (2) procedural fluency, (3) strategic competence, (4) adaptive reasoning. It was found that students’ mathematical proficiency skill in solving generating function and recurrence relation especially in strategic competence and adaptive reasoning was still low.
